Narendra Modi on Friday surpassed Indira Gandhi to become the second longest-serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms in India. According to officials, Prime Minister Modi completed 4,078 consecutive days in office as of Friday, overtaking former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served an unbroken term of 4,077 days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.
The record for the longest uninterrupted tenure remains with Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Both Nehru and Modi led their respective parties to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections. Nehru served from August 15, 1947, until his death on May 27, 1964, clocking an unbroken tenure of 6,130 days.
As an elected head of government, at both the state and national levels, Modi already holds the record for the longest tenure. He first became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and remained in office until assuming the role of Prime Minister in 2014.
Modi, the first Prime Minister born after Independence, is also the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. Officials noted that he is the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms at the Centre.
“Modi is the only leader in India, among all Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers, to win six consecutive elections as the leader of a party, Gujarat Assembly elections in 2002, 2007, and 2012, and national elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024,” an official added.
