CM Devendra Fadnavis directs permanent tribute to activists who died during Samyukta Maharashtra movement
The Maharashtra government will prominently display the names of 106 activists who died during the Samyukta Maharashtra movement at the newly acquired Air India building in south Mumbai.
The 106 activists who sacrificed their lives during the movement for the creation of Maharashtra are set to receive a permanent place of honour at Air India's new administrative building taken over by the Maharashtra government, state minister Ashish Shelar said on Sunday.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that their names be prominently displayed at the building, Shelar said in a statement.
The 106 activists were killed during the historic Samyukta Maharashtra movement. Their sacrifice played a key role in the formation of the state.
Cultural Affairs Minister Shelar had written to Fadnavis seeking that their names be displayed prominently on the facade of the new building. The chief minister has now directed the state chief secretary to take necessary action on the proposal, Shelar said.
"The martyrs whose sacrifice gave us Maharashtra must be remembered by future generations. It is our responsibility to honour their sacrifice on behalf of the government. Displaying the names of all 106 martyrs on the administrative building will be a true tribute to them," he said.
The Maharashtra government recently acquired the iconic Air India building, a defining feature of the south Mumbai skyline known for its prime sea-facing location, for Rs 1,601 crore.
The building is set to become an important centre for the state government's administrative work.
