11 Dead as Van Plunges into Well After Hitting Bike in MP Village

Sources said an LPG gas cylinder was in the van and this caused leakage of gas contributing to the fatalities

Bhopal: A van carrying 13 people on Sunday hit a bike and then plunged into a well in a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district, leaving 11 persons including the bike rider and a rescuer dead and four others injured, police said.

The incident occurred in the village of Chakariya under Narayangarh police station limits in the afternoon, police said.

“Total 13 people were travelling in the van. Nine of them died and four others were injured in the incident”, Ratlam range deputy inspector general of police Manoj Singh said.

Prima facie it appears the driver lost control of the wheels leading the van to veer off the road and then fall into the well after hitting a bike, he said.

The bike rider also died.

A local villager, identified as Manohar, jumped into the well to save the victims.

But he died due to suspected suffocation.

Sources said an LPG gas cylinder was in the van and this caused leakage of gas contributing to the fatalities.

A rescue operation was launched by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the local police to remove the victims out of the well.

Bodies of all the 11 deceased people were removed from the well.

This apart, four injured people including a woman and a child were rescued from the well.

They were admitted to the district hospital in Mandsaur.
