Monsoon To Reach Early, Telangana Under Yellow Alert For Thunderstorms, Moderate Rain

All conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to reach Kerala in the next 4–5 days - IMD

HYDERABAD: The southwest monsoon is advancing faster than usual and could hit the state by the first week of June. A cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea is pushing the monsoon ahead of its usual pace. IMD officials said this system is expected to evolve into a low-pressure area off the Karnataka coast by May 22 and intensify further. Telangana is set to receive rainfall under its influence even before the monsoon officially enters the state.

Elsewhere, the IMD said Telangana was likely to experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over the next two to three days, especially in northern and central districts. It put 11 districts on yellow alert, warning of lightning and rain-related risks.

An IMD scientist said, “All conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to reach Kerala in the next 4–5 days. This could make it the earliest onset since 2010.” The normal onset date over Kerala is June 1. Experts now believe the monsoon may hit the Kerala coast before May 27.

In Telangana, districts under yellow alert include Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Kamareddy, Medak, Siddipet, and Rajanna Sircilla. The IMD has advised caution, especially for those working outdoors and in agriculture.

Experts also said there is a chance that the northeast may see monsoon rains even before Kerala, depending on the movement of the system near the Bay of Bengal and coastal Myanmar.
