Modi Hails Lula’s Brazil Poll Victory
PM Modi vows to deepen strategic cooperation and advance the shared priorities of the Global South.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing hope that India and Brazil would strengthen their strategic partnership and advance the priorities of the Global South.
Lula, 81, won a fourth non-consecutive presidential term after defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday's runoff election.
“Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, President Lula, on his remarkable re-election victory,” Modi posted on X.
He said he looked forward to deepening the India-Brazil strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across sectors.
“Together, we will continue to strengthen our cooperation across diverse sectors, advance the shared priorities of the Global South and work towards a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world,” Modi said.
Lula secured 51.79 per cent of the valid votes against Bolsonaro's 48.21 per cent, overcoming his first-round deficit to win by about 44.3 lakh votes.
The result marks another comeback for Lula, who previously won presidential elections in 2002, 2006 and 2022.
Bolsonaro is the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, whom Lula defeated in the 2022 election.
Lula had skipped the BRICS Summit hosted by India last month amid his re-election campaign. Modi had visited Brazil in July 2025 for the previous BRICS Summit.
