Modi Hails Jainism's Role in Nation-Building, Cites Its Relevance to Global Peace
At Navkar Mahamantra Divas, Modi says Jain values offer answers to terrorism, war, and ecological crises

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday underscored Jainism’s vital role in shaping India’s identity, asserting that its core values offer a solution to pressing global challenges such as terrorism, war, and environmental degradation. Addressing the “Navkar Mahamantra Divas,” he praised Jain ideals for promoting peace, harmony, and an inclusive worldview.
Emphasising “anekantavada,” a core Jain doctrine that recognises multiple perspectives in the search for ultimate truth, Modi said the principle is much needed worldwide. He highlighted Jainism’s commitment to the interdependence of life, reflected in its strict stance against violence. “This carries the best lesson for peace, harmony, and environmental protection,” he noted.
The Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to preserving Jain heritage, referencing efforts to digitise ancient texts and the recent recognition of Pali and Prakrit as classical languages. He pointed out that Jain influences, including tirthankara idols, are visible even in Parliament’s building.
Modi also called on citizens to adopt nine pledges: conserve water, plant a tree in memory of one’s mother, promote cleanliness, support local products, explore India’s diverse regions, practice natural farming, consume more millets and reduce edible oil intake, help the underprivileged, and engage in sports and yoga. He urged people to “embrace anyone who chants ‘Bharat mata ki jai,’” reinforcing a call for national unity.
Touching on the global crisis of climate change, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of a sustainable lifestyle — a practice he credited to Jain traditions. He added that this aligns with India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
Modi described the Navkar Mantra as a spiritual cornerstone that guides individuals toward knowledge and purposeful action. “A prosperous India signifies both progress and heritage,” he said, calling for continued development without forsaking tradition.
Noting the recent recovery and repatriation of over 20 ancient Indian idols from abroad, including several Jain tirthankaras, Modi advocated for preserving precious historical texts. He announced the “Gyan Bharatam Mission,” included in the latest budget, as a step toward safeguarding India’s literary heritage.
The “Navkar Mahamantra Divas” celebrates spiritual harmony and ethical awareness, rallying communities through the collective chanting of a mantra rooted in non-violence, humility, and enlightenment.
