Minister Savadi Reviews Flood-Drought Damage, Assures Action on Harawada Sea Erosion

Karwar: Minister Laxman Savadi on Thursday said the government would undertake an extensive review of flood- and drought-related damage across Uttara Kannada district and submit a comprehensive report seeking immediate as well as long-term relief measures for affected farmers and residents.

Chairing a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Karwar, Savadi said inputs would be gathered from legislators and officials across all Assembly constituencies before recommending relief measures to the state government.

"Farmers have suffered significant financial losses due to both heavy rainfall and drought conditions. Relief must be provided on priority, while medium- and long-term measures will also be planned," he said.

The minister also assured that the government would also consult agricultural experts to address the spread of leaf spot and fruit rot diseases affecting arecanut plantations in the district.

Savadi also visited the sea erosion-hit Harawada village in Ankola taluk, where he interacted with residents and inspected the extent of coastal damage. Stressing the need for a permanent solution, he directed officials to take measures to prevent further erosion.

"If permanent protective measures are not taken, more houses and agricultural land could be lost to the sea in the coming years. Protecting the lives and property of coastal residents must be a priority," he said.

Residents told the minister that although the intensity of rain, wind and sea waves was lower than in previous years, sea erosion had continued to worsen, leaving several houses along the coast vulnerable. They said the problem recurred every monsoon and alleged that despite visits by the Chief Minister and other ministers in the past, no lasting solution had been implemented.
