Social media giant says the Prime Minister's video was mistakenly taken down and has now been reinstated.
Meta on Tuesday said a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that was blocked on Facebook had been "removed in error" and has now been restored.
The development came as the IT Ministry summoned Meta's Global Head of Public Policy over the removal of the Prime Minister's Facebook post addressed to the youth, according to sources.
In a statement, the social media company clarified that the removal was inadvertent and confirmed that the content is once again available on the platform.
"We removed the video in error. It has now been restored," Meta said, without providing further details on the reason behind the mistaken removal or how the error occurred.
According to sources, the government is treating the incident seriously and is examining both Meta's explanation and the circumstances that led to the video's removal.
Sources said the IT Ministry has summoned Meta's Global Head of Public Policy to explain the circumstances surrounding the removal of the Prime Minister's post. Meta representatives and other concerned officials may also be asked to provide further clarification.
The video, uploaded on July 23, featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message to Gen Z during a student protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). In his address, the Prime Minister said the government would announce tougher measures to tackle paper leaks and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent and foolproof examination system.
The video was uploaded across the Prime Minister's official social media platforms and remained accessible on other platforms even as it was briefly unavailable on Facebook.
The clarification came after the Prime Minister's video was briefly unavailable on Facebook, prompting questions over its removal. Meta did not elaborate on whether the incident was caused by an automated moderation system, a technical glitch or any other internal process. The company also did not specify how long the video remained unavailable before it was restored.
