Many Kolkata Schools Shut On Monday For TMC Shahid Diwas Rally
TMC observes Shahid Diwas rally in remembrance of 13 Youth Congress workers killed in a police firing during a protest march on 21 July in 1993 when Ms Banerjee was in the Congress: Reports

KOLKATA: Several premier schools in Kolkata will remain shut on Monday due to Shahid Diwas (Martyr's Day) rally, the annual mega event of the Trinamul Congress at Dharmatala in heart of the city that attracts lakhs of party workers from all districts of West Bengal to listen to their party supremo and chief minister Mamata Banerjee's address, and leaves the city choked from morning to afternoon
These schools include Loreto House, Loreto Convent Entally, St James’ School, The Heritage School, Loreto Day School Sealdah, Loreto Day School Elliot Road, Loreto Day School Dharamtala, Loreto Day School Bowbazar, La Martiniere Schools for Boys, La Martiniere Schools for Girls, Birla High School, Sushila Birla Girls’ School and Birla High School, Mukundapur.
Among the list, La Martiniere Schools for Boys, La Martiniere Schools for Girls, Birla High School, Sushila Birla Girls’ School and Birla High School, Mukundapur will conduct online classes while South Point will hold online classes up to Class V. The closure of the prominent schools come despite the Calcutta High Court's order to Kolkata Police to keep traffic movement smooth during office hours.
On July 18, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed city police commissioner Manoj Verma to ensure no traffic jams between 9 am and 11 am on roads leading to the Calcutta HC or within a radius of five kms of offices in central Kolkata. Every year, TMC observes Shahid Diwas rally in remembrance of 13 Youth Congress workers killed in a police firing during a protest march on 21 July in 1993 when Ms Banerjee was in the Congress.
This time, the turnout, the TMC hopes, is going to set a new record as the grand gathering happens to be its last big congregation before the Assembly Election next year. On Sunday Ms Banerjee visited the venue in front of the Victoria House at Dharmatala and supervised the preparations. She acknowledged that people would be inconvenienced to ‘some extent’ due to her rally and took a swipe at the BJP in the opposition for organising a parallel rally in Siliguri on Monday.
