Mann Aide Skips CBI Summons

The summons followed searches by the agency at eight locations in Punjab on Tuesday: Reports

NEW DELHI: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s officer on special duty Rajbir Ghuman and five co-accused did not appear before the CBI at its Chandigarh office on Wednesday despite summons in a corruption case.

The summons followed searches by the agency at eight locations in Punjab on Tuesday, including premises linked to Mr Ghuman that were also being used as the Chief Minister’s camp office.

Sources said Ghuman did not appear because the summons had not been formally served on him.

The agency, meanwhile, is awaiting developments in the Supreme Court, where the Punjab government has sought an urgent hearing against the probe ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

CBI sources said the agency would follow due procedure after the apex court’s directions.

A day after the searches, Mann accused the BJP of misusing central agencies ahead of elections and claimed the CBI had found nothing incriminating.

He said such action would neither intimidate him nor his government.

Speaking to reporters in Dhuri in Sangrur, Mann alleged that the BJP routinely used central agencies to “harass” Opposition leaders, their associates and family members before elections.
