Madhya Pradesh: Congress To Challenge MP Waqf Board’s Reconstitution, Incorporation Of Hindu Members, In SC

The party has announced that it would move the apex court challenging the state government’s decision in this regard: Reports

BHOPAL: Congress on Tuesday opposed the reconstitution of Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board with incorporation of two Hindu members, calling it ‘inappropriate’, considering that the matter is pending before the supreme court.

The party has announced that it would move the apex court challenging the state government’s decision in this regard.

The ruling BJP however dismissed contention of the Congress, saying that the state Waqf Board is reconstituted in strict adherence to the law.

Congress MLA Arif Masood said that the issue relating to the amended Waqf Board Act is pending with the supreme court and the reorganization of the state Waqf Board could have waited till the disposal of the case.

“In such a situation, the reconstitution of the Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board and incorporation of non-Muslim members is inappropriate and raises legal questions. We will challenge the reconstitution of Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board and appointment of its members in the supreme court”, he said.

Senior Congress leader and former minister P C Sharma said that the decision by the state BJP government on the matter was taken to divert public attention from the theft of donations for the Ayodhya Ram Temple.

State minister Vishwas Sarang said that it is heartening that Madhya Pradesh has become the first state in the country to enact Waqf Act 2026 and include two Hindu members in the board.

He slammed the Congress for criticizing the state government’s move, saying that it should not be seen in the prism of religion.

“This is not about including any non-Muslim member in the mosque committee; the Waqf Board is separate. The Waqf Board is not limited to mosques, its scope is much broader”, he said.

The chairman of the MP Waqf Board Sanawar Patel, who has been renominated as head of the reconstituted body, said that the board has been reorganized strictly adhering to the law.

The Opposition is trying to politicize the issue, he said.

The Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board was reconstituted on Sunday with the inclusion of two Hindus in the ten-member body.
