BHOPAL: The Opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh pledged on Sunday to scrap the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Madhya Pradesh, if the party returns to power in the state in the 2028 assembly polls.
This was announced by Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Madhya Pradesh Umang Singhar at a party event here.
The Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly passed the UCC Bill in July this year amid strong protests from the Congress legislators.
Mr. Singhar alleged that the provisions of the Bill interfered with Muslim religion and said that the Congress is opposed to any kind of interference with any religion by the state.
The BJP has taken a swipe at the Congress for making such an announcement, saying that the UCC Bill has been passed in the house and sent to the governor for his assent.
The Bill promises to promote women empowerment by giving equal rights to them, newly elected BJP Rajya Sabha member Rajneesh Agrawal said.
The pledge by the Congress to scrap the UCC when it comes to power in the state in 2028 exposes the appeasement policy of the party, he said.
He said that the Congress never worked in the interest of the women and always worked to appease the minorities as part of its vote bank policy, he alleged.
