Hyderabad: A powerful thunderstorm with heavy rain and lightning struck Singar village, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, on the night of May 21-22, 2025, killing over 70 parrots roosting in a Peepal tree near a local temple. Villagers awoke to dead parrots scattered across fields.
Over 30 injured parrots received medical care, but few survived. Forest officials assessed the damage and oversaw the burial of the birds. Images and videos of the incident spread widely on social media and news platforms.
Environmentalists attribute the mass deaths to climate change. “This is a wake-up call to protect biodiversity. We’ve never lost so many birds at once,” said Dr. Ramesh Kumar, a local environmentalist.
Experts warn that climate change causes more frequent, intense weather events like thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and lightning, which threaten birds, especially parrots roosting in trees or open areas. Deforestation and habitat loss further reduce safe roosting sites, increasing risks during storms.
Urgent action is needed to protect biodiversity and prevent further tragedies.
