Guwahati: A Kuki woman was killed and her husband and infant son were injured when suspected armed militants opened fire on their home in Tollenin Manipur’s Tamenglong district in the early hours of Sunday.
Security sources at Imphal said that the attack occurred around 4 a.m. at the residence in the predominantly Kuki village located near National Highway-37, which connects Imphal with Jiribam.
The deceased has been identified as Lhingngai Singsit. Her husband, Seineh Singsit and their youngest son sustained gunshot wounds.
According to local sources, the son was shot in the arm with a bullet also lodged in his buttocks. The couple’s other children were initially unaccounted for but were later traced. Security forces, including personnel from the Assam Rifles stationed nearby at Kaimai, rushed to the village, provided medical assistance, and evacuated the injured father and son towards Jiribam for treatment. Additional security forces have been deployed in the area.
Police described the incident as an indiscriminate firing by suspected militants. No group has claimed responsibility. Local residents alleged involvement of suspected NSCN-IM cadres and Naga Village Guards, but these claims could not be independently verified and there was no official confirmation.
The attack took place on a day observed by the Kuki community as Black Day, commemorating lives lost and suffering during violent events of the 1990s. The Kuki Youth Organisation (KYO) Women’s Council condemned the killing, calling it particularly painful on this occasion and urging an immediate, impartial investigation. “A family has been left to bear profound pain and loss,” the council said in a statement.
The Kaimai Village Authority, representing the nearby Naga village, also strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “deliberate and malicious attempt to create disharmony and division among communities.” The authority urged the government to conduct an impartial probe, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice, while calling on both communities to exercise restraint and stand for peace, unity and communal harmony.
The incident has heightened concerns and tension over the safety of civilians along the sensitive NH-37 corridor in Tamenglong district, which has seen lingering ethnic tensions.
