Raipur: Kopra reservoir in Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh has been designated as a Ramsar Site.

With this, Chhattisgarh got its first Ramsar Site.

Ramsar Sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention, headquartered in Gland, Switzerland.

Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai has hailed the development, saying that ‘Declaration of Kopra reservoir as Chhattisgarh’s first Ramsar Site is a moment of pride for the state”.

He said that the achievement represents ‘global recognition for the state’s rich biodiversity, diverse bird habitats, and sustained water conservation’.

Mr. Sai said that Ramsar designation of Kopra reservoir marks a significant and motivating step towards the target outlined in “Chhattisgarh Vision 2047”- to obtain Ramsar status for 20 wetlands in the state by 2030.

The achievement strengthens the state’s environmental conservation policy and long-term ecological vision, he added.

He said that this global recognition will boost ecotourism in the region, generating new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

It will also enhance public awareness about protecting wetland and serve as a milestone in safeguarding natural resources for future generations, he added.
