Kolkata: Three FIRs Registered Over SRFTI Campus Clash

Kolkata: A day after the campus clash between Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) students and members of an RSS outfit, three FIRs were initiated at the Panchasayar police station in Mukundapur of the city on Monday.

One of them is related to a complaint lodged by Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), the RSS affiliate, against the students for vandalising its event and abusing the organisers at the SRFTI main auditorium on Sunday afternoon.

In the complaint, ABGP state functionary Anjan Sinha alleged that the students had wrongfully restrained the organisation’s members for several hours at the campus after ransacking the venue and outraged the modesty of women in the audience of the hall.

Another FIR is based on the complaint of SRFTI dean (film studies) Sukanta Majumdar who claimed that unidentified persons had obstructed and injured the students and two faculty members apart from threatening them on their campus.

The third FIR is a suo moto from the police. It was filed by Koushik Bose, additional officer-in-charge of Panchasayar police station who blamed unidentified students of manhandling him and his colleagues during the unrest.

Incidentally, cops had a tough time entering the campus as the main gate was locked from inside for several hours.

They waited outside till late in the evening before getting access. Since morning, the campus remained tense as police personnel stood guard.

Meanwhile, state higher education minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay warned of stern actions against the students who were seen in videos tearing up posters featuring Bharat Mata and youth icon Swami Vivekananda at the venue.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap however took a dig at BJP over SRFTI unrest. Sharing the students union’s statement, he sarcastically observed in social media, “This is what they stole the votes for in Bengal. This and so much more.”
