Khurshid to Represent Cong. at Khamenei Burial

Iran has invited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leaders Salman Khurshid and Pawan Khera to attend the ceremonies

New Delhi: Former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid will represent the Congress at the burial ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled from July 5 to 9.

Iran has invited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leaders Salman Khurshid and Pawan Khera to attend the ceremonies. Khurshid, who heads the party’s foreign affairs department, left for Iran on Thursday, a senior Congress leader said.

The ceremonies will be held across multiple cities, beginning in Tehran and Qom on July 5, 6 and 7, and concluding in Mashhad on July 9.

Khamenei, who led Iran for over three decades, was killed on February 28 during large-scale air strikes on Tehran.

Separately, India will be officially represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Syed Ata Hasnain, who are scheduled to travel to Iran on Friday.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had also invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the ceremonies.

The participation of representatives from both the government and the Opposition reflects India’s continued diplomatic engagement with Iran.
