Ken-Betwa Model to Solve Water Rows: Modi

New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked states to resolve inter-state water disputes through cooperation, timely clearances and technology-based monitoring, and said the Ken-Betwa project should serve as a model.
Chairing the 51st PRAGATI meeting, Modi reviewed seven infrastructure projects across railways, power and road sectors spanning nine states, with a total outlay of about ₹30,000 crore. He said delays in implementation lead to cost escalation and deprive citizens of timely access to essential services.
“During yesterday's PRAGATI session, projects worth over Rs 30,000 crore were reviewed. The works covered sectors like railways, power and road connectivity. Aspects relating to ports, Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 and other social sector schemes were also discussed,” he said.
While reviewing the Ken-Betwa river interlinking project, Modi said it should be replicated to address inter-state water issues through coordinated and time-bound execution. States were also encouraged to explore river-linking, water conservation, groundwater recharge and efficient irrigation for long-term water security.

Modi also reviewed Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and stressed outcome-based implementation with regular monitoring and citizen participation. He asked states to expedite solid waste management infrastructure, including waste processing and GOBARdhan plants.
In the power sector, he called for accelerated adoption of rooftop solar in urban areas, including residential clusters and public institutions, to reduce electricity costs and improve energy security.
Reviewing connectivity projects, he said the Vadhavan Port should be developed as a model for integrated, multi-modal logistics with links to coastal shipping, inland waterways, freight corridors, rail, highways and airports.
He also suggested exploring the use of canal networks for installing solar panels to generate renewable energy while reducing evaporation losses.
Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan said a system of monthly review of social sector schemes at the state level has been introduced to ensure regular monitoring and faster resolution of implementation issues.
The review mechanism is expected to strengthen coordination and improve execution of key infrastructure and social sector projects.
