Jammu And Kashmir: Encounter Breaks Out In Udhampur

An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in a remote forest area in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

Jammu: A fresh encounter is underway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district after the security forces established contact with suspected Islamic militants in the hilly region’s Basantgarh, Majalta area late Tuesday afternoon.

Officials in garrison town of Udhampur said that reinforcements have been rushed to the area. This, they said, follows an intense, multi‑day counter‑terror operation in eastern Kishtwar district codenamed Operation Trashi‑I where troops have been engaged with a small group of suspected Jaish‑e‑Muhammad militants for past couple of weeks during which a paratrooper was killed and ten other soldiers were injured.

A defence spokesman here said that the security agencies launched an intelligence‑based joint operation after inputs about militant presence in Udhampur’s Majalta, Basantgarh sector. The Army’s White Knight Corps said that the CIF Delta, J&K Police and CRPF reported contact with the terrorists at around 4 pm following which a cordon was established and a firefight was ongoing as reinforcements moved in. It wrote on ‘X’, “Operation Kiya In an intelligence based joint Operation, contact has been established with the terrorists by the Troops of CIF Delta, White Knight Corps, J&K Police and CRPF at around 4 pm today in the general area of Basantgarh. Cordon has been established. Firefight is on. Operation is in progress”.
