IPS Officer Alters Maharashtra CM’s Order On Posting, Faces Departmental Inquiry

Deputy Commandant faces departmental enquiry for altering transfer orders without approval; also accused of shielding kin in dowry harassment-suicide case.

Mumbai: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a departmental enquiry (DE) against controversial IPS officer and Deputy Commandant, Home Guard Jalinder Supekar, who had altered the transfer orders of Group A and Group B jail officers after they were cleared by Mr Fadnavis himself. A senior bureaucrat from the state government said that an order of DE was issued under Rule 10 of the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1979 last week.

The IPS officer was also in controversy recently when he was accused of attempting to protect his nephew Shashank and his family in the Vaishnavi Hagawane dowry harassment-suicide case. At that time, he was serving as special inspector-general of police (prisons).

Officials said that Sampat Hamu Adhe, DySP (deputy superintendent of police) was posted at Nanded by the home department. But Mr. Supekar altered the postings of Mr Adhe to Latur on deputation without taking permission from the home department.

When the government came to know about such irregularities in transfers and the home department held an inquiry about it, Mr Supekar transferred Mr. Adhe to Nanded on a post which never existed.

“Sampat Hamu Adhe was promoted to the post of Superintendent, Nanded District Jail, as per government order dated 11 February 2025. Without allowing Mr Adhe to take charge of the said post, the government order was deliberately disobeyed by Mr Supekar. Moreover, an attempt was made to compromise with Mr Adhe by offering a posting in Mumbai. Thereafter, an illegal deputation order was issued to post him at Latur Jail under the signature of PA (Private Assistant) of Mr Supekar. Dnyaneshwar Kharat was working illegally on deputation at Nanded with the blessings of Mr. Supekar, despite his regular posting at Morshi of Amravati district. This is a gross violation of the government order issued with the CM’s approval,” said a senior official, requesting anonymity.

The senior bureaucrat said that the DE will be completed in the next six to eight months against Mr. Supekar as it is a serious issue.

The officials said that this incident triggered the home department to check whether such things had happened in the past too. “When we enquired, we got to know about two more cases. Dattatray Gawde, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Sandeep Bhutekar, SP of Buldhana, were also transferred by the home department at Akola District Jail and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar respectively in the past. But they never joined. We have instructed both officers to join the post as per the government order,” he said.

Following the accusation of protecting the accused in the Vaishnavi Hagawane dowry harassment-suicide case, the home department on May 30 had transferred Mr Supekar as deputy commandant-general, Home Guards in Mumbai.
