WDMMA's latest index evaluates military air arms based on combat capability, technology, logistics and fleet balance rather than aircraft numbers alone.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has secured the sixth position in the Global Air Powers Ranking 2026, while the United States Air Force (USAF) retained the top spot, according to the latest assessment by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA).
The annual ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of global military aviation by analysing the overall combat capability of air forces rather than merely comparing the size of their aircraft inventories.
The WDMMA currently tracks 48,082 military aircraft across 129 air arms in 103 countries, including independent air wings operated by armies, navies and marine forces.
The rankings are based on the organisation's proprietary TruVal Rating (TVR), a formula that evaluates multiple factors such as technological modernisation, operational readiness, logistical support, strike capability, defensive strength and the overall balance of an air fleet.
According to the report, the United States Air Force achieved the highest TVR score of 242.9, maintaining its position as the world's most capable air power.
India's sixth-place ranking reflects the growing strength of the IAF, supported by a mix of advanced fighter aircraft, transport fleets, helicopters, force multipliers and indigenous capabilities that continue to enhance its operational readiness.
The WDMMA noted that the rankings are designed to measure real-world combat effectiveness rather than sheer fleet size, ensuring that technologically advanced and well-balanced air forces receive appropriate recognition.
The Global Air Powers Ranking serves as a benchmark for comparing the evolving capabilities of military aviation across the world, highlighting the importance of modernisation, sustainability and operational flexibility in contemporary air warfare.
