India Tests Agni-5 With Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle Capability

Defence minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Indian Army and industry on the successful test

New Delhi: India conducted a successful trial of the Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) capability from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.

The missile was flight-tested with multiple payloads aimed at different targets across a wide area in the Indian Ocean region, demonstrating the ability to engage multiple targets with a single system. Officials said the test was carried out to validate the MIRV system on the already inducted Agni-5 missile.

The trial had led to speculation about a possible test of the Agni-6 system, but officials maintained that the launch pertained to Agni-5. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had earlier conducted the first successful flight test of the Agni-5 with MIRV technology in March 2024.

“The telemetry and tracking was carried out by multiple ground and ship-based stations. These systems tracked the entire missile trajectory from lift-off till the impact of all payloads. Flight data confirmed that all mission objectives were met during the trial,” the defence ministry said.

The missile has been developed by DRDO laboratories with support from industry, and the trial was witnessed by DRDO scientists and Indian Army personnel.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Indian Army and industry on the successful test, stating that it strengthens defence preparedness.
