India ranks 125th in Global Passport Index 2026

Globally, Sweden topped the 2026 Global Passport Index with a score of 96.05 out of 100, followed by Switzerland and Finland

India has been ranked 125th out of 197 countries in the 2026 Global Passport Index (GPI), slipping one place from last year, according to the fifth edition of the report released by residency and citizenship advisory firm Global Citizen Solutions (GCS).

The index places India significantly lower than the Henley Passport Index, where the Indian passport ranks around 80th. Unlike the Henley ranking, which is based primarily on visa-free and visa-on-arrival access, the Global Passport Index uses a broader methodology that assesses passports across mobility, investment potential and quality of living.

According to the report, India's overall composite score reached 45.1, its highest in the past five years, despite the slight drop in ranking. India has improved modestly over the longer term, moving up from 127th place in 2021 to 125th in 2026.

Indian passport holders currently enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 26 countries. These include Bhutan, Nepal, Jamaica, Macau, Palestine, Tunisia, Angola and Barbados. However, travellers still require visas for many major destinations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, China and the United Arab Emirates.

India was also ranked 136th in the Enhanced Mobility Index, which measures global travel freedom while considering the attractiveness and quality of destination countries. This category carries the highest weight in the overall index.

Globally, Sweden topped the 2026 Global Passport Index with a score of 96.05 out of 100, followed by Switzerland and Finland. Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway and Singapore also featured among the top 10.

The report highlighted that most of the highest-ranked passports belong to European countries, while Singapore was the only non-European nation in the top 10. Afghanistan ranked last in the index.
