New Delhi: India has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) with the United States for the Indian Army’s first purchase of the shoulder-fired Javelin anti-tank guided missile system through the US foreign military sales process, aimed at meeting urgent operational requirements along the borders with China and Pakistan.
The deal, expected to be worth around $45.7 million, is likely to include 25 launch units and 100 operational missiles. The current package of the portable “fire-and-forget” missile system is being acquired under emergency procurement, while a much larger deal involving joint manufacturing in India could be taken up later.
“This agreement reflects a defence partnership that is growing deeper, more capable and more consequential,” US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said. He said the Javelin agreement demonstrated the depth of US support for the Indian Army and opened new opportunities for defence industries of the two countries to work together.
With the signing of the LOA, India becomes a customer of the Javelin system, an advanced, medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile, the US Embassy said.
The Javelin is used by the US Army, US Marine Corps and several international customers. It is designed to engage a wide range of targets, including armoured vehicles and fortified positions.
The system is produced by the Javelin Joint Venture, a partnership between RTX and Lockheed Martin.
The US Embassy said the agreement further strengthened the India-US Major Defense Partnership and would also open discussions on mutually beneficial co-production and other opportunities to strengthen the defence industrial bases of both countries.
India’s Bharat Dynamics Limited has an agreement with the Javelin Joint Venture to explore opportunities for jointly manufacturing the Javelin anti-tank guided weapon system in India.
The Javelin’s portability, precision and fire-and-forget capability make it one of the most advanced anti-tank weapons in service. Weighing about 15.9 kg, the system can be carried and fired from the shoulder by a soldier.
