India Denies Meddling in Canada’s Affairs

MEA urges diplomatic engagement instead of public discourse over bilateral concerns

New Delhi: India on Thursday rejected allegations in a report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service of foreign interference, asserting that it does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India “categorically” rejected the claims and maintained that concerns should be addressed through established mechanisms rather than public discourse.

Referring to the report, he noted that it acknowledged the presence of supporters of the Khalistan separatist movement in Canada and said India has consistently raised concerns over extremist elements operating from Canadian soil.

He said India has urged the Canadian government to act against activities such as threats to Indian leaders and diplomats, vandalism of places of worship and attempts to promote secessionism.

Bilateral relations between India and Canada have improved since Prime Minister Mark Carney assumed office, following a period of strained ties under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The remarks follow earlier tensions after Canada accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023, which India had denied.
