India Condemns Attacks on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Three Indonesian troops killed; India raises concern over the safety of its 600 personnel

New Delhi: India on Thursday condemned attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and called for accountability, following an incident that killed three Indonesian personnel during Israeli assaults against Hezbollah positions last month.
At a weekly briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We condemn the recent attacks on UN Peacekeepers deployed in UNIFIL, and pay our homage to the fallen Blue Helmets. We urge all parties to ensure the inviolability of the UN mission and the safety and security of the Peacekeepers. As one of the largest and longest serving contributors to Peacekeeping, and in consonance with UNSC resolution 2589, we seek accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.”
He did not name any country in connection with the incident. India said the development has implications for the safety of its personnel deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, where about 600 Indian troops are stationed.
Jaiswal added, “India has been playing an important role in UN Peacekeeping Operations. Our troops under the aegis of UN-mandated peacekeeping missions have made a significant contribution to global peace and security. In the UNIFIL, we have around 600 Indian troops.”
According to reports, Indonesia has sought a United Nations investigation into the deaths of its peacekeepers following the strikes in southern Lebanon.
