India Calls US Tariffs Unfair

New Delhi slams Washington’s move to impose additional tariffs, labels them "unjustified and unreasonable".

India on Tuesday strongly condemned the United States’ decision to impose additional tariffs on certain Indian goods, calling the move "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable". The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India would take "all actions necessary" to safeguard its national interests and economic sovereignty.

Responding to Washington’s announcement of higher import duties citing trade imbalances and domestic concerns, the MEA said in a statement: “We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.”

The remarks come amid growing trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington, as the Donald Trump administration reviews tariff regimes on multiple countries. While officials from both sides have held discussions over pending trade issues, this latest move has drawn sharp criticism from Indian authorities.

Trade experts note that the US tariffs could affect key Indian exports such as steel, aluminum, and certain agricultural products. India is expected to raise the matter in bilateral trade talks and explore remedial measures under WTO provisions.

The MEA emphasised that New Delhi remains committed to fair and rules-based global trade, but reserves the right to respond decisively when its interests are threatened. Further developments are expected as diplomatic and trade negotiations continue between the two strategic partners.
