Incessant Rains Trigger Floods; 9 Drown As Car Swept Away In Swollen Rivulet

BHOPAL: Nine people including two children and six women were on Monday killed when the car they were travelling in, was swept away in a flooded stream in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district.
The tragedy happened when the car carrying 11 passengers including the driver was passing through an under-construction bridge, which was under water due to the flooded Jhiri stream, near Padna village at around 9.30 in the morning, officials said.
Two people including driver Mukesh Singh survived the mishap when they managed to swim to safety, officials said.
They were admitted to the hospital.
Later, the car was fished out of the water with the help of a crane, leading to recovery of all nine bodies.
The passengers of the ill-fated car were travelling to Kadlabad in Rajgarh district from Ghansad village in Dewas district in Madhya Pradesh to get an appointment with a local healer to treat a paralysis-affected man, according to the driver.
Chief minister Mohan Yadav has declared financial assistance of Rs four lakh each to the next kin of the deceased.
The 72-hour-long incessant rains have caused floods in many rivers and rivulets in the state, leaving around four dozen villages cut off from the mainlands and roads and bridges at several places marooned.
Major rivers such as Narmada, Betwa, Kalisingh, Ghoda Pachad were on spate due to incessant rains over the past 72 hours.
While a bridge in Sehore district was washed away, a bridge in Raisen district was under eight feet deep water, cutting off at least two dozen villages from the mainland.
The Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in 21 districts in the state in the coming 48 hours.
