AP Students Hold Session In State Legislative Assembly On Constitution Day

The session, organised by the Education department coinciding with the Constitution Day, witnessed active participation from students of all constituencies in the legislative process, emphasising that creating laws is important but following them is even more crucial.

VIJAYAWADA: In a novel gesture, one student from each of the 175 constituencies in Andhra Pradesh participated in a session within the State Legislative Assembly premises at Amaravati on Wednesday.

The session, organised by the Education department coinciding with the Constitution Day, witnessed active participation from students of all constituencies in the legislative process, emphasising that creating laws is important but following them is even more crucial.

The mock assembly session replicated the legislative proceedings with students playing prominent roles – M. Leela Gautam from Manyam district as chief minister, Soumya from the same district as leader of opposition, Kodi Yogi from Visakhapatnam as deputy chief minister, Chinmayi from Tirupati district as education minister, and Swathi from Kakinada functioned as the speaker.

Significantly, these students participated in the assembly session confidently, conducting the election of speaker, and running the question hour and zero hour, and holding discussions on bills.

Among the bills introduced and approved had been the Andhra Pradesh Children’s Online Safety and Social Media Regulation Bill 2025 and the Andhra Pradesh Student Environmental Protection Act 2025. The environmental bill sparked debate, with the opposition expressing concerns about the deteriorating environment affecting children.

Mobile addiction among students became a hot topic. Education minister Chinmayi revealed that around 100 cases of mobile addiction have been recorded this academic year. The government is considering counselling services and de-addiction centres, with pilot projects under review.

Opposition members pressed for clear timelines during the session, prompting heated exchanges and a call from speaker to maintain decorum of the assembly. Even marshals entered the assembly to remove disruptive members. Students managed to replicate the importance of ensuring discipline and parliamentary decorum.

The mock assembly concluded with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu unveiling a specially drafted Indian Constitution Book for Children. A solemn pledge by students followed to uphold constitutional values.

On the occasion, minister Lokesh took the students around the AP Assembly, explaining various details. He later had lunch with them.

Both the Chief Minister and education minister took an active interest in the mock assembly session by students.

The session ended with group photos that included students, ministers, MLAs and officials.
