Sikkim landslide: Amit Shah Speaks To CM, Assures All Help From Centre

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday spoke to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to enquire about the situation arising out of the landslide at an under-construction tunnel in Namchi district, officials said. Shah took stock of the ongoing rescue operations and assured all possible help and assistance to the affected people from the Centre, the officials said.
Eight workers were killed in the incident, Tamang said earlier on Tuesday.
Around 27 workers were trapped inside the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project tunnel at Samardung when a landslide blocked its entrance and triggered a suspected gas leak on Monday afternoon, according to officials.
The rescue operation has been complicated by the presence of the gas inside the tunnel, with several rescuers experiencing dizziness and losing consciousness while attempting to reach the trapped workers, the officials said.
The gas is believed to be naturally emanating from underground strata or rock formations disturbed by the landslide.
