Odisha : Students, Villagers Organise Farewell Procession For Retiring Teachers

Hundreds of local residents, alumni, students and well-wishers joined the procession to express gratitude in Odisha's Sundargarh district.

Bhubaneswar : In a moving tribute to the lifelong dedication of their teachers, villagers, former students and members of the school community organised a 20-kilometre ceremonial farewell procession for four retiring teachers of Gogua Government School in Bonai block of Odisha's Sundargarh district.

The unprecedented send-off, held on Wednesday in Gogua village, saw the teachers escorted through several villages in flower-decorated vehicles amid the rhythmic beats of traditional drums and folk music. Hundreds of local residents, alumni, students and well-wishers joined the procession, turning the farewell into a celebration of the educators' years of service and their lasting impact on generations of students.

The organisers adorned the vehicles with flowers and accompanied the teachers on the nearly 20-kilometre journey, reflecting the deep respect and affection the community holds for those who shaped the lives of countless children.

“This is an emotional moment for all of us. Over the past three months, the entire team of senior teachers has retired. Their departure marks the end of an era for Gogua School. The institution will now be guided by a new generation of teachers,” said Dushmanta Sahu, a former student.

Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming affection shown by the community, retiring physical education teacher Prafulla Sahu said he would always remain available for the school.

“Retirement will not end my association with the school. Whenever the institution needs my support, I will be ready to help in every possible way. We are proud that one of our students, Sushmita, recently represented the Indian hockey team in a tournament at Ranchi,” he said.

The unique farewell drew widespread appreciation, with many describing it as a rare and heartwarming example of the enduring bond between teachers and the communities they serve, and a powerful reminder of the respect educators continue to command in rural India.
