Odisha Climbs To 7th Nationally In Rooftop Solar Installations
1.74 lakh systems installed under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has moved up to the seventh position nationally in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with the state crossing 1.5 lakh installations, according to data available on the Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) portal.
The state has recorded around 1.74 lakh rooftop solar installations against 3,12,527 applications, reflecting a sharp acceleration in household adoption of decentralised solar power.
Odisha has climbed from 13th to seventh position, moving ahead of Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Applications have risen from 1,95,513 to 3,12,527, while installations have increased from 72,538 to around 1.74 lakh. The application-to-installation conversion rate has consequently improved from 37.1 per cent to 53.4per cent.
The state has set a target of three lakh rooftop solar installations by 2027. Eligible residential consumers can receive combined Central and state assistance of up to Rs 1.38 lakh for a 3 kWp rooftop solar system, subject to applicable scheme guidelines.
The four Odisha distribution companies—TPCODL, TPWODL, TPNODL and TPSODL—have played a key role in the rollout by facilitating consumer applications, inspections, net-metering, commissioning and vendor coordination.
TPCODL has facilitated 56,842 installations, followed by TPWODL with 48,905, TPNODL with 44,785 and TPSODL with 23,881.
Consumer outreach has also been expanded through initiatives such as “Mo Chhata, Mo Sanchaya”, Surya Ghar Gram Sabhas and TPCODL’s mobile ‘Solar Rath’ campaign. The Solar Didi initiative of Tata Power Skill Development Institute is also aimed at training women in rooftop solar installation and maintenance and strengthening grassroots mobilisation.
The deployment is spread across the state, with Baleshwar, Ganjam, Khordha and Cuttack each crossing 10,000 installations. Baleshwar leads with 16,069 installations, followed by Ganjam (15,301), Khordha (14,236) and Cuttack (13,343).
Together, the four districts account for around 143 MWp of rooftop solar capacity. Across Odisha, commissioned rooftop systems have reached about 410 MWp.
“Odisha’s rise from 13th to seventh position nationally and the achievement of more than 1.5 lakh rooftop solar installations are a strong testament to the growing confidence of consumers in clean energy,” said Gajanan Kale, Chief, Odisha Distribution Business, Tata Power.
He said utility-led execution, consumer facilitation, net-metering support, vendor coordination and grassroots engagement would remain critical to converting rising demand into installations.
With policy incentives and utility-led implementation driving adoption, Odisha is emerging as a significant market for distributed residential solar power.
