Thiruvananthapuram: Museum, Zoo toilets not fully functional

The Zoo official told DC that the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation made arrangements to pump out the drainage for Rs 2,800.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Scores of joggers who come to the Museum campus daily are having a hard time as the Sulabh toilet near the Museum police station gate frequently does not function. It was the same with the She-toilet inside the Zoo where the septic tank was overflowing. Now the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has drained out the septic waste and since Saturday evening, the She-toilet is working.

Near the Museum, there are two toilets next to the car parking area and another Sulabh toilet near the Museum Police Station gate. Though these are all pay and use toilets, the authorities have made a provision to use the toilet after 8 pm until the next morning which has helped the scores of morning walkers and joggers who come almost every day. A senior Zoo official told DC that the septic tank had developed a block which had been brought to the attention of the Sulabh team.

“Their engineer visited the area and inspected the scene. A new septic tank has to be installed and since there was a foul smell, the Museum and Zoo director asked the Engineer to lock it up. Once the new septic tank is installed, the toilet will be back in operation”, said a Zoo official. When it comes to the Zoo premises, there are three toilets.

One of the She-toilets has a problem with its door hinges. The second toilet was not operational for several months due to drainage issues. However, the Zoo official told DC that the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation made arrangements to pump out the drainage for Rs 2,800. On Monday, Zoo officials are making further arrangements to have a proper drainage facility installed at the toilet near the Zoo veterinary hospital.
