Kerala: Traffic no threat for Ambulances!
Kochi: Now ambulances and other vehicles in an emergency can have an uninterrupted run on the 12-km Kakkanad-Medical Trust Junction stretch without getting trapped in traffic signals.
With the pilot experiment at Kakkanad junction turning out to be a success, the city traffic police has given the nod to install traffic emergency response system (T-ERS) -- a centralised internet of things (IoT)-based system with artificial intelligence at different levels developed by two entrepreneurs Mohamed Jasim and Muhammed Sadique.
“The main idea is to enable vehicles like ambulances pass the traffic junctions with the signals getting automatically green upon such vehicles arriving. The pilot system worked successfully for over three months, and the commissioner has given the go-ahead to install it at six junctions between Kakkanad and Medical Trust Junction including the busy Vytilla junction,” said Mohamed Jasim who along with Sadique is running the start-up venture Traffitizer Technologies Pvt Ltd.
“The product would help police manage emergency situations. The duo has taken classes for traffic personnel on the functioning of the system,” said K. A. Abdul Salam, assistant commissioner of police (traffic east).
"The system works on a hardware-software module that can be connected to the traffic control system at any traffic junction. A device is fitted to the controller at traffic signals which are in-turn connected to our server. The vehicles need to install a mobile application."
“All that an ambulance driver has got to do before starting an emergency trip is to turn on the T-ERS configured in their ambulance unit. Traffic junctions will automatically initiate a green channel path when the ambulance enters a predefined zone near the traffic junction area,” Mr Jasim added.
The duo is now focusing on developing a similar system for green light optimisation at signals on real time traffic basis.
"The system is capable of detecting vehicles from 300 to 500-meter distance from a junction and helps to configure green light time based on actual traffic condition,” he said.
