Spurt in crime against children in Tamil Nadu: NCRB

Chennai: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics for the year 2015, released on Tuesday, revealed that the crimes against children in Tamil Nadu registered an increase of 11 per cent when compared to the previous year.

All India data also recorded a 5 per cent spurt in the number of cases to 94,172 from 89,423 cases in the previous year. In the state, a total of 2,617 cases were registered in 2015 while the total number of cases stood at 2,354 and the number of victims affected shot up to 2,880 from 2,455 posting an increase of over 17 per cent.

A sharp increase was recorded in state cases registered under Pocso Act wherein 1,544 cases with 1,603 children as victims were recorded last year while the figures stood at 1,055 cases with 1,084 children as victims in 2014.

As many as 77 cases of child marriages were stopped in the state in 2015 while the state machinery was successful in rescuing 47 children from such marriage in 2014.

A total of 403 children were kidnapped in 398 cases registered in 2015 as against 395 children abducted in 390 cases reported in the previous year.

Three human trafficking cases were recorded in 2015 and the same was recorded in ‘other crimes’ heads in previous years, which too recorded an increase to 485 victims affected in 2015 compared to 289 victims in 2014 with a corresponding increase in the number of cases to 396 from 268.

The number of victims of attempt to murder had dipped to 2 from 12. Similarly the unnatural offences cases registered had also come down to 1 from 2, previous year.

The state recorded two infanticide cases in 2015 while no such case was reported in the previous year. A sharp decline was observed in the category of children being murdered with 98 children being killed in 87 cases reported in 2015 as against 119 children being murdered in 103 cases in 2014.

57 per cent increase in juvenile cases in TN

Tamil Nadu has recorded a 57 per cent increase in the number of cases registered against juveniles in conflict with the law in 2015 compared to 2014. In 2014, the TN police had registered a total of 945 cases, which went up to 1,483 in 2015, latest NCRB data show.

Last year, among states, Madhya Pradesh had recorded highest number of cases against juveniles, with 6,320 cases followed by Maharashtra with 5,482 cases. Murder cases against juveniles went up from 53 in 2015 as opposed to 63 earlier.

Attempt to murder cases against juveniles has more than doubled in TN, going up from 39 in 2014 to 87, which is a 123 per cent increase.

Kidnapping and abduction cases against juveniles also went up from 4 to 19 last year while dacoity cases have come down from 13 to 11. The number of cases related robbery, house breaks and thefts too had gone up during the same period. Cases of rioting have gone up from 23 to 57 in 2015. Cases of causing death due to negligent driving by juveniles have almost tripled, from 11 in 2014 to 31 in 2015.
