Shock waves after Gnanadesikan's suspension

The swift action taken by the state government, has come like a bolt from the blue to several IAS officers on Tuesday morning.

Chennai: A day after the state placed former chief secretary and chairman of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation K. Gnanadesikan and the commissioner of geology Atul Anand under suspension, the rank and file of several government departments are now in a state of shock.

The swift action taken by the state government, has come like a bolt from the blue to several IAS officers on Tuesday morning and it has sent a strong message that anyone who is found to have erred is bound to be taken to task.

The ripple effect was most visible in the offices of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, Industries department and corporate offices of Geology and Mining as the suspended officers were managing these high profile government departments with their balance sheets running in to crores.

“Officers on special duty are now frequenting, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation headquarters and also the Tamil Nadu Department of Geology and Mining,” said an informed state official confirming that the two officers are in trouble for misappropriation of powers.

The axe on Gnanadesikan falls amidst charges of suspicious dealings in sand mining, besides allegations by opposition parties of large scale corruption in Tangedco.

On Monday, there were also long discussions at the Tangedco headquarters and senior staff from the state electricity minister’s chamber were keen on getting details of certain projects and a few administration staff at the headquarters left the office very late, a TNEB engineer told Deccan Chronicle.

It may be noted that the government has shown the door to some of its party men and ministers for wrong doings in the past and this is the first time
the officers are under scanner.

No official reason were provided for the suspension of two senior IAS officers and their suspension orders issued by chief secretary Rama Mohan Rao were also not shared in the public domain or dispatched to the printing and stationary department till Tuesday.
