Mysuru: Tamil film screening stopped by enraged farmers

Farmers enraged over water shortage lay siege to theatre.

Mysuru: Farmers opposed the screening of a Tamil movie at Padma theatre here while protesting against the release of water to Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday.

The Karnataka government has stopped releasing water for irrigation to farmers in the Cauvery catchment area while continuing to release water to Tamil Nadu as per the distress formula which forced the farmers to launch the protest.

The farmers under the aegis of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Sugarcane Growers Association, obstructed the screening of Tamil movie ‘Bayam Oru Payanam’ in the theatre.

They dispersed only after the screening of the movie was stopped. They also warned that they would not allow the screening of any Tamil movie in theatres in Mysuru until the state stops releasing water to Tamil Nadu.

The farmers later took up a protest march from Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple and laid siege to the CADA (Command Area Development Authority) office.
