Major crimes down in Tamil Nadu, says NCRB

Data shows number of juveniles in crimes has gone up.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu had managed to keep major crimes like murders, property offences and crime against women under control in 2015 while crimes against children and human trafficking went up compared to 2014, according to latest statistics from the National Crime Record Bureau.

The number of cases registered against juveniles in conflict with law has shown an increase of 60 per cent in 2015 compared to the statistics of 2014. The latest data show that the number of murders has come down from 1,815 in 2014 to 1,748 in 2015. Similarly, murder for gain too decreased from 127 to 107, NCRB data show. The number of property offences too has came down last year when compared to the previous year.

There were 6,325 crimes recorded against woman In 2014, which number came down to 5,847 last year. The decrease in crime against women all over the country has come down too from a total of 3.21 lakh in 2014 to 3.09 lakh in
2015. Across the country, Uttar Pradesh leads with 35,527 cases of crimes against women in 2015 closely followed by West Bengal with 33,218 cases and Maharashtra with 31,126 cases.

Tamil Nadu, has been using the stringent provisions of Posco Act against those committing crimes against children, registering 2,617 cases in 2015 against 2,354 in 2014.

There were 1,483 cases registered against juveniles in conflict with the law in Tamil Nadu while all over India the number was 31,395 in 2015. In Tamil Nadu, the number has gone up from 945 in 2014 to 1,483, an increase of 60 per cent.

Bleeding profusely from the head, Sonali was rushed to a private hospital at Madurai, about 140 km away, but succumbed to injuries. Her relatives staged a demonstration outside the hospital demanding action against the killer and dispersed only after the police assured them that Udayakumar had been secured and a murder case would be slapped. The college management has announced that the institution would be closed for three days to mourn Sonali's death.

It may be recalled that in a similar case, techie Swathi was hacked to death in the Nungambakkam railway station in Chennai on July 24 in full public view in the morning. After a man-hunt, police arrested Ramkumar on the charge of killing her because she spurned his love.
