Kalamassery bus stand to be ready by Onam

To have shopping complex and a coffee shop.

KOCHI: Kalamassery will have a long-awaited bus stand before Onam that will have several amenities to cater to people coming to a host of institutions including the Ernakulam Government Medical College and the Kochi Cancer Research Centre (KCRC). “We are considering making the bus stand Wi-Fi enabled and a decision will be taken soon. The bus stand will have features that are friendly for the physically challenged including ramps and also a separate bathroom for them. The bus stand will sport a coffee shop and also will have a shopping complex that will house six shops,” said Ms Jessy Peter, chairperson of Kalamassery Municipality which is building the bus stand.

She said that the bus stand would have 15 buses at a time and KSRTC buses which had started plying through the area since the opening of Kochi Metro would use the bus stand once it was opened. She said that the profile of the area would change once the bus stand became operational.

At the instance of former municipal chairman Jamal Manakkadan, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had taken a personal interest in realizing the bus stand which would offer more connectivity to HMT, Startup Village, NUALS, XIME, new Kochi Cancer Centre, Naval Armament Depot, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Government Polytechnic, Women’s Polytechnic, Government ITI, Women’s ITI, Food Craft Institute, Productivity Council and St Paul’s College apart from the Ernakulam Government Medical College Hospital and Nursing College. It was after much lobbying by the medical superintendent of Kochi Cancer Research Centre Dr P.G. Balagopal and the Justice Krishna Iyer Movement that the KSRTC decided to start operating buses to the area after the opening of the Kochi Metro.
