German aid for Chennai's climate change programme

The German government is keen on helping Chennai and wants the capital city to be part of the climate change programmes.

Chennai: Greater Chennai will soon adopt a climate change programme using German funds. The Greater Chennai corporation council passed a resolution to this effect on Saturday.

The German government is keen on helping Chennai and wants the capital city to be part of the climate change programmes supported by them, Chennai Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy informed the council. Chennai will now join hands with cities in South Africa and Chile under the climate change programme and there are efforts to make Chennai feature in the list of C 40 cities, a network of the world megacities committed to addressing climate change, Duraisamy said.

Chennai corporation sources said the civic body will now collect the modules practised by developed cities on climate change and greenhouse gases. And this module will be upgraded and drafted according to Chennai requirement.

Similarly, on C40 front, the civic body has already written to mayor of Rio De Janeiro, who is the global ambassador for C40 network, seeking its inclusion. C40 brings together a unique set of data base exchange and it is an effective forum where members can collaborate and share knowledge on climate change.
C40’s flagship event, the sixth biennial Mayors summit, will be held in Ciudad de México from November 30 – December 2, 2016. Chennai is likely to represent in the global event, if accepted in to C40 network, sources said.

The corporation passed a resolution, under which real time decision support system and flood monitoring control room are to be established this monsoon. Hydrological model and the city’s stormwater drain networkwill be studied.
