Amma water, solar panels to be extended

The corporation also resolved property tax exemption to heritage buildings in Chennai.

Chennai: Chennai corporation on Saturday announced expansion of two major projects, extension of Amma drinking water scheme that provides purified mineral water in congested localities and provision of solar panels in all the corporation buildings.

Other resolutions passed in the council include installation of new LEDs, replacement of electrical fitments, appointment of temporary staff to take up vector control measures and increase in pay hike for medical officers and health officers attached to Chennai corporation.

The corporation also resolved property tax exemption to heritage buildings in Chennai. Already, the civic body is taking up a restoration project for heritage buildings and the tax exemption will be an added bonanza to the heritage asset of Chennai, a corporation official said adding a target of adding 3000 MW of solar power capacity is also under perusal.

Under the state policy, city corporation will promotes solar roof top systems, solar water heating systems, development of solar parks. For the first phase, the feasibility report and bid documents for commssionerate of municipal administration were completed for all Corporations and Municipalities.
Now, the Greater Chennai corporation plans to do the same for its 2444 buildings under its ownership, official sources said.

On extending the Amma drinking water scheme, sources said tenders will be floated to install purified water plants at thirty more locations in Chennai adding to the existing twenty such facilities.

The treatment plants will provide up to 2,000 litres of water per day and each family located in the neighbourhoods can collect 20 litres of water. Soon smart cards will be distributed to the beneficiaries, sources said.
