Malappuram: In a bid to restore peace in Tirur and Tanur coastal areas in the district, a joint reconciliation meet of CPM and Indian Union Muslim League have proposed a slew of measures, which includes a series of peace gatherings throughout the region.
The district leadership of both parties have constituted seven member joint committees to lead the peace efforts. The committee will organise peace meetings at Unniyal and Koottayi, from where most of the clashes erupt, on June 3.
The committees have been asked to chart out plans to broker peace between the rival parties. Meeting will also be held on June 8 at both the places which will be attended by representatives from clash-hit wards. This will be followed by ward level peace gatherings attended by local body representatives, victims of political violence and their family members.
Besides the joint efforts, both parties have also decided to carry out intensified inner party campaigns and ensure involvement of maximum workers in the proposed peace meetings.
IUML district general secretary U.A. Latheef said that the state and district committees of the party supported the peace effort.
“We have decided to put an end to the recurring clashes. Local leaders will lead the efforts while party leadership will extend all the support and monitor the activities,” Latheef said. Attendance of the victims of violence will also be ensured in these meetings, said local CPM leader Basheer Koottayi.
The meeting was attended by MPs P.K. Kunhalikutty, E.T. Mohammed Basheer MP, veteran CPM leader Paloli Mohammed Kutty, IUML district president Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal, CPM district secretary E.N. Mohandas and party former district secretary P.P. Vasudevan besides local leaders.
