Thiruvananthapuram corporation drive collects 10 tonnes of glass waste
Thiruvananthapuram: The corporation collected 10 tonnes of glass waste on Monday, the mayor said in a press statement. The collection was part of the corporation’s “Ente Nagaram, Sundara Nagaram” campaign. Collection centres were open at Poojappura ground, Jagathy ground, Putharikandam ground, Pipinmoodu Junction and Vanchiyoor junction. In the recent past, 43 tonnes of glass waste and 300 tonnes of plastic waste were collected, according to health standing committee chairperson Sreekumar K.
The civic body also plans to conduct a people’s clean-up campaign on June 5, which is observed as World Environment Day. Unlike last year, when the whole city was focussing on planting saplings, this time, the corporation has decided to focus on waste management.
This is not directly related to the United Nations theme of ‘Go Wild for Life – Zero Tolerance for the Illegal Wildlife Trade’. The civic body is putting a thrust on the waste management campaign, especially as it has proclaimed that there would be a ban on lightweight plastic.
The organising committee for the people’s campaign met on Monday. The meeting was presided over by Sreekumar K. Representatives of various associations and officials attended the function.
