VS Achuthanandan rues poor rate of graft convictions

The cases pending in courts get delayed indefinitely because of various limitations.

Thiruvananthapuram: Administrative Reforms Commission chairman V. S. Achuthanandan on Thursday expressed concern over the low conviction rate in corruption cases. Speaking after launching a book titled "Azhymathiyude Parinamam” here the veteran leader said corruption cases involving lakhs of crores of rupees were being reported across the country, but the conviction of wrongdoers was few. He said even the main accused died during the investigation which dragged on for years in many big corruption cases.

The cases pending in courts get delayed indefinitely because of various limitations. He said while corruption was wreaking havoc with the lives of people, the corrupt were the least affected. “In the present times, corruption issue is very relevant and something which needs to be discussed with all seriousness. Corruption is rampant in almost all spheres of our social life.

Benefits are being provided to the undeserving through illegal and undemocratic means. As a result, the disproportionate assets of those indulging in corrupt practices are growing manifold,” he said. "Corruption affects the poorest of the poor who are deprived of benefits and services. At the end of the day corruption of politicians and officials eats into the system.” He said the biggest responsibility of government was to provide corruption-free services to the people.
