Kids attacked by dogs; Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to pay bill
Hyderabad: Three children were attacked by stray dogs at Vasthu Nagar in LB Nagar on Wednesday. For the first time, the GHMC is bearing the medical costs. While two kids suffered injuries on the lower back, the third received an elbow injury.
The total medical cost to treat one of the victims, Rupa Shankar, 12, at a private hospital was Rs 35,000 and the GHMC will be picking up the bill. The state child rights protection commission has written to the GHMC commissioner to bear the cost of dog bite victims who cannot afford treatment.
According to a witness, Rupa had gone to a general store when the incident occurred. A stray dog pounced on Rupa and M. Sathvik, 4, while the third child escaped with minor injuries. The locals tried to chase the dog but it escaped.
Mr Achyuta Rao, member of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said, “The commission has directed GHMC to bear the hospital expenses including the high cost of immuno-globulin injection, which the victims can’t afford.
When we inquired about the increase in the population of dogs in LB Nagar, GHMC officials said there was a veterinary hospital in Autonagar and all the dogs in the city were being let off there. Due to space and manpower issues, the dogs were escaping from the hospital and moving into Autonagar and LB Nagar.” The commission has directed the GHMC to take stern action and take all measures to prevent a repeat of these incidents.
