Telangana records a dip in overall crime rate
Hyderabad: Marking 2020 as a violence-free year for law and order, Director General of Police (DGP) M. Mahendar Reddy said on Wednesday that there was a decrease of 6 per cent in crime overall in the state.
The number of murders fell by 8.59 per cent, property crime 21 per cent, dacoities 28 per cent, robberies 33 per cent and burglaries 17 per cent, ordinary thefts 22 per cent and chain snatching by 46 per cent, the DGP said in his annual report.
Property recovery had increased by one per cent with 54 per cent recovery rate. The conviction rate had increased remarkably at 48.5 per cent compared to 29.4 per cent last year.
The police secured four death penalties in crucial cases in 2020 as a result of quality investigation and witness protection mechanisms, Mahendar Reddy said. The state police have registered 35,000 cases and filed chargesheets in the last one year.
Crimes against women have reduced by 1.92 per cent while white collar offences by 42 per cent. Road accidents reduced by about 14 per cent while deaths due to road accidents came down by nine per cent and injuries by 17 per cent," Mahendar Reddy said.
The emergency response management system was able to deliver services in 4-8 minutes of average time after receiving calls from ‘100’ and ‘112’.
While briefing about Maoist insurgency and prevention measures taken by the police, the DGP said that they have worked towards the goal of crime-free, Maoist-free Telangana, though Maoists from Chhattisgarh have attempted to enter and set up bases in the state.
According to the DGP, there were 11 incidents of exchange of fire with the Maoists, resulting in the death of 11 Maoists/Naxalites; another 135 Maoists had been arrested of which two were state committee members and 4four district committee members besides four area committee members.
“Though the efforts of Maoists prove their presence, I can say that we are 100 per cent successful in preventing their invasion into the state,” the DGP said.
