Six killed in mishaps in Chennai, suburbs

In a fatal accident involving an autorickshaw near Hasthinapuram, an elderly pedestrian crossing the road was killed along Rajendra Prasad Salai.

Chennai: As many as six persons, including two teenagers on a bike along Outer Ring Road, were killed in 4 separate accidents reported in the city and its outskirts.

During the small hours of Tuesday, a trailer without a container heading to the City after offloading cargo in Tiruchy rammed into a stationary lorry on Grand Southern Trunk (GST) road near Madurantagam. The driver — M. Rajkumar (52), and his relative P. Venkatesan, (45) of New Washermenpet - were killed on the spot. The accident took place at Padalam along GST Road, and poor visibility at the time of the accident is attributed as the prime reason. The stationary lorry, laden with coconuts from the southern districts, was parked in the roadside due to a breakdown.

In a fatal accident involving an autorickshaw near Hasthinapuram, an elderly pedestrian crossing the road was killed along Rajendra Prasad Salai. The speeding autorickshaw was heading to Hasthinapuram from Chromepet and mowed down the deceased, identified as Devasahayam of Agananuru street, Anna Nagar, Chromepet.

In a case of hit-and-run, an unidentified male aged about 40 years was killed. Police, who moved the body to a government hospital for post-mortem, were trying to ascertain the identity of the deceased and the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.

The teenagers Harikaran (17), a Class XII student and his friend Balakrishnan (19), a first year ITI student, both residents of Thiruverkadu, were killed as the bike they were on skidded at high speed. The teens were racing with another biker, who was also their friend.

The incident occurred near Poonamallee on Sunday around 2.45 pm, and both riders were not wearing helmets. The 4-member gang of friends was heading to Chembarambakkam Lake when Balakrishnan, who was riding, lost balance while climbing an entry ramp from the service lane near Velappanchavadi. Neither of the deceased had a valid driving licence.
