All districts to get mobile cancer detection units: K K Shailaja

Jeevanam Project aims at early detection of ovarian and breast cancers among women and extending early treatment.

KOZHIKODE: The state government will establish mobile cancer detection units in all districts, said Health Minister K.K Shailaja. She was addressing the gathering after the launch of the third phase of the Jeevanam project of Kozhikode Municipal Corporation Kudumbashree Community Development Society. The project which aims at early detection of ovarian and breast cancers among women and extending early treatment, was launched in 2011-12 with the co-operation of Malabar Cancer Care Centre, Kannur and other voluntary organisations.

The Health Minister said that cancer was spreading in society at an alarming rate. The government was dedicated to taking steps against this menace by detecting cancer at an early stage. “Malabar Cancer Care Centre will be converted into a fully free treatment centre. The government is also planning to convert primary health centres into family health centres. For this purpose, we have identified 152 PHCs,” she said.

Minister Shailaja added that funds had been sanctioned to 42 taluk hospitals for starting dialysis units. Multi-specialty facilities would be arranged in all district hospitals. Deputy Mayor Meera Darsak presided over the function. As part of the third phase, cancer detection camps will be organised at three centres in the City. A Jeevanam drug bank, where cancer patients can avail free medicines will also start functioning in the Corporation Old Office premises from December 1.
