Two Class X students save mother, son from drowning

Siddu and Ranjit attempted to rescue those trapped in the car breaking windowpanes, to allow the occupants to escape, but it was in vain

WARANGAL: Two Class 10 students, Siddu and Ranjit, rescued a woman and her two-year-old son who were in a car that fell into an agricultural well. Four members of the woman’s family perished in the accident on Friday night at Kesamudram in Mahbubabad district, police said on Saturday.

Police said the students were passing by when they saw the car fall into the well. They rushed to the spot and saw the woman, later identified as Suma Latha, struggling to escape from the car along with son Dikshit. They fetched a rope and threw it to her, helping Suma Latha climb to safety with the child.

Siddu and Ranjit attempted to rescue those trapped in the car, even breaking its windowpanes, to allow the occupants to escape, but it was in vain.

Police said the car had seven occupants: Suma Latha, her son Dikshit, her parents Banoth Bhadru and Hachali, her uncle Guguloth Bikku and two relatives Guguloth Lalitha and her son Suresh.

They were returning from a programme conducted by their relatives at Annaram Sharif in Parvathagiri mandal of Warangal district to their home in Goliya thanda of Bhadradri Kothagudem district. Lalitha had requested that she and her son Suresh be dropped on the way at Mahabubabad.

When the car was proceeding via Annaram and Enugurthi, it fell into an agricultural well beside the bypass road at Kesamudram. Police said Bikku managed to escape from the car.

Bhadru (40), Hachali (33), Lalitha (40) and Suresh (14) died in the car.

The police who went to the spot in receiving information retrieved the car from the well and shifted the bodies to the government hospital for postmortem. Police said that Bikku was drunk.

Police officials and locals appreciated Siddu and Ranjit for saving Suma Latha and her son without panicking.
