Students worst hit by RTC strike

Hyderabad: The ongoing strike by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) employees has made life extremely difficult for the general public. Working professionals and students seem to have been affected the most. They are struggling to get to their offices and colleges on time. They are often late, even though they leave home much earlier than they are used to.

Arvind, an employee of a private firm in Begumpet, was waiting at Abids for a bus at 10.30 am, on Tuesday. He had been there since 9.45 am. “All the buses that came by were full and I simply couldn’t get in. I have been late to work on most days in the past few weeks because of the unpredictability of RTC buses,” he said. At Kacheguda, Avinash, a degree student studying at a college in Secunderabad, said he wasn’t able to depend on TSRTC buses.

“Sometimes five buses come in quick succession. Other times, there isn’t a single bus for half-an-hour,” he said. Srinivas Matsa, studying in an engineering college in Moinabad, said he was facing the same problems. Sharan Raichur, state president of the Engineering Students Joint Action Committee, claimed engineering students were most affected by the strike. Mr Raichur also said many drivers employed by the colleges to operate their buses are now working with the TSRTC.
